Immediate Management of Anaphylaxis

Course duration: 1 day

Intro to the course:

An Anaphylactic shock is a life threatening and serious allergic reaction to an allergen such as certain foods for exmaple nuts, shellfish or insect stings like bees. If it is not treated properly, it can cause death.
This training is for candidates who are already qualified in First Aid either by the 1 day or 3 day course, to enable them to recognise and treat anaphylaxis effectively.

When administering the medication, it is important to recognise and be able to tell the difference between allergic reactions and anaphylactic reactions.

This course is suitable for all First Aiders and healthcare professionals, as well as those in a high risk environment where such medication is available, or when your risk assessment says employees need this qualifcation, for example if you have someone in your care who has anaphylaxis and you may be called upon to administer their medication.

Syllabus:

At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe anaphylaxis
  • Identify triggers for anaphylaxis

Describe life threatening problems associated with:

  • Airway
  • Breathing
  • Circulation
  • Explain the need for an early call for help

Explain the treatment for anaphylaxis:

  • Non re-breather mask
  • Removal of trigger
  • Auto-injector
  • Identify key features of adrenaline-auto injectors
  • Conduct an initial assessment using the ABCDE approach
  • Demonstrate the recovery position
  • Demonstrate CPR for adult and/or child
  • Recognise the need to use an auto-injector
  • Prepare medication for administration during anaphylaxis treatment
  • Demonstrate the safe use of an adrenaline auto-injector using a training device
  • Safely dispose of sharps according to agreed ways of working
  • Handover the casualty to a medical professional

Certificate- valid for 3 years.
Renewing the qualification – attend the same course again.
